Lithuanian EdTech Solutions for Remote Learning Amid COVID-19 Quarantine

Quarantine strikes Lithuania as all schools and universities have been closed since March 16th. Students and teachers are looking for traditional education alternatives to start remote learning/teaching during the quarantine period.

Lithuanian EdTech companies are stepping up to this challenge. They open up their online classroom platforms for Lithuania and other countries to use as solutions during the Covid-19 quarantine.

BitDegree is a blockchain-based, gamified online learning platform that focuses on providing quality online courses. Besides offering paid courses, BitDegree has dozens of free options as well, giving people with limited financial resources a chance to educate themselves during this difficult time. Also, educators are welcome to use this platform for free, upload lessons and encourage learners to study from them. Thanks to the newest update of the Instructor Studio, teachers will be able to monitor students’ activity and create quizzes to test them.

2. Code Academy Kids

Code Academy kids is a programming academy that also aims to fill the current gap in education. The academy provides courses for students of various ages, from 5-year-olds to 18-year-olds. Since March 13, all classes have been taken online, letting Lithuanian students learn from the safety of their homes. Virtual classrooms allow students from the country to start remotely learning various programming concepts and principles.

4. Edukraftas

Edukraftas is a project by Trys Kubai, encouraging students to learn math, biology, chemistry, programming, and other subjects in an unexpected way. Bit & Byte is not a remote learning platform originally. However, addressing the current crisis, the platform is developing online classes on various technological experimentations and solutions. 8. Robotikos Mokykla

Robotikos Mokykla takes action during this quarantine period and hopes to provide quality material on robotics and programming. The organization offers live streams of their lessons. Additionally, Robotikos Mokykla takes advantage of Discord, giving a chance for peers to communicate and ask questions during live streams. For these lessons to work smoothly, one teacher will explain the material, and another will answer questions from students.

Egzaminatorius joins the club of online teaching platforms, giving students the opportunity to prepare for their exams. 19. Kūrybingumo mokykla

The creators of Kūrybingumo mokykla aim to free the creative thinking of the students and encourage them to come up with original and innovative ideas. 20. Lietuvos Junior Achievement

Lietuvos Junior Achievement wants the students to use their time in quarantine to improve their knowledge about economics and entrepreneurship. To help them achieve this goal, they are giving away free access to an interactive textbook ‘Ekonomika ir verslumas 11–12 klasėms’ and an accompanying teacher’s book. The informative guide contains comprehensive learning materials, individual and team assignments. The organization is also sharing the Youth Empowered educational program, which will provide 9–12-grade students with a better understanding of their own abilities and the critical skills today’s job market requires.

21. Jaunieji gamtos reindžeriai

Jaunasis reindžeris invites children of 6–14 years of age to get to know the nature of Lithuania better, learn about geology and environmental issues. The digital platform offers two kinds of tasks: some can be completed online, and for other, more practical assignments, the students will have to wander outside, go on their own adventures, and do some hands-on research. Having completed a task, the student receives a badge – if they collect a certain amount, they can move onto the next level. The platform is created in collaboration with professionals of environmental educations: biologists, zoologists, and specialists working in national and regional parks.

23. Matematika.lt

Matematika.lt is a great learning tool for any high school student preparing to take their math examinations. In the digital platform, they can find over a hundred video lectures presented by professional educators with years of experience in high schools. Every time a teacher introduces a new topic, they also present the viewers with tasks from the exams students took in the past few years and explain how to solve them step by step. 24. Gamtukai.lt by LR AM

In the last few years, the Gamtukai mobile studio visited schools all around Lithuania and organized dozens of educational events focused on getting to know nature better. Even though the project is now over, some of the activities have been moved to the digital space. In the platform, students can continue completing tests, watching videos and pre-recorded scientific experiments. All the materials have been prepared by professionals of nature science and informal education, who are currently developing comprehensive tools for educators (coming to the platform soon).

25. GIS mokykla

GIS mokykla is a joint project presented by the Lithuanian Geography Teachers Association and UAB Hnit-Baltic. Every school that joins the program gets free access to the most modern Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software. Using it, the students can explore their environment and master creating interactive digital maps. The platform also contains teaching materials and multiple examples of how GIS can be used to break the monotony of not just geography, but also history, IT, and other types of lessons at schools.

26. Coding school

Vilnius Coding School and Kaunas Coding School have been offering offline coding, testing, data analytics, and web design courses for a few years now. However, during the quarantine period, they have also decided to offer distance learning. Lectures are live-streamed from the classroom, according to a schedule prepared and shared with students in advance. Students can communicate amongst themselves and talk directly to the teacher. After the live-stream is finished, a recording is saved and made available to rewatch anytime. For those who complete the training, the school also provides career counseling and helps with the job search.

27. SUNNY FUNNIES

What started as a didactic project for kindergarteners of ages 2-5 soon grew into a mobile application available for every parent, guardian or educator on Google Play. SunnyFunnies combines interactive storytelling with educational games. To achieve the goal of teaching preschoolers in a safe and effective manner, the creators of the app teamed up with the professors of the Vytautas Magnus University Education Academy. They created age-appropriate tasks that help develop the child’s artistic expression, perception, and language skills.

28. ELIIS

ELIIS is an online system that simplifies monitoring and organizing the activities of kindergartens and other institutions that provide preschool education. Different types of users can choose for a vast choice of practical services. The parents can monitor activities of their own child, as well as the whole group of kindergarteners, and communicate with educators. The teachers can use the system for documentation, planning, and filling out digital diaries. Government officials can log in to review detailed statistics. ELIIS is an everyday choice of around 10,000 kindergarten teachers and headmasters.

29. Flyent

The Flyent system has been specifically designed to teach those whose mother tongue is not Lithuanian to speak and understand the language fluently. It is a listening-based system – therefore, you won’t find any rules of grammar, syntax, or complicated theory. Using their computers or mobile devices, students can listen to recordings of conversations and monologues in proper Lithuanian – this way, they acquire language skills gradually, get used to using the correct forms and constructions of words, as well as correct pronunciation. They can also test their skills by completing simple exercises provided with each recording.
